PETRONAS the first petrol company in Malaysia to accept Visa payWave contactless payments

12/11/2014

PETRONAS, the largest petrol station network in Malaysia, will introduce Visa payWave in seven of its sites this month, becoming the first petrol company in Malaysia to offer the speed and convenience of contactless payments.

The Visa payWave terminals will be placed at selected Kedai Mesra located at NKVE Damansara, Jalan Kolam Ayer, Solaris Putra, Solaris Serdang, Putrajaya Precint 16, USJ 20 and KLCC.

Shaharuddin Muhammad Sidek, Senior General Manager of Retail Business Division of PETRONAS Dagangan Berhad said: “We are continuously looking at new ways on how we can offer greater ease and convenience for our customers. The partnership with Visa in bringing its contactless payment technology to our Kedai Mesra was made with the aim to provide fast, easy and secure transactions to our customers across Malaysia. We are in the midst of exploring to expand our network of contactless payment system to more PETRONAS stations in the near future.”

Shaharuddin added that there are currently over 1,000 PETRONAS stations nationwide, all offering the convenience of fuelling up, shopping, dining, banking and much more under one roof.

Visa payWave is Visa’s contactless payment technology and can be found on Visa cards bearing the Visa payWave symbol.  It enables cardholders to make faster payments in a convenient and secure manner simply by waving their card against a contactless reader. Visa payWave cards have an embedded antenna and microchip, enabling "contactless" communication with a reader upon checkout. The transaction is processed through the same secure Visa network used for all Visa transactions.

Visa payWave was first introduced in Malaysia in 2013. To date, there are over one million Visa payWave cards in circulation in Malaysia issued by six banks including Maybank, Hong Leong Bank, Public Bank, RHB Bank, UOB and Bank Simpanan Nasional (BSN).

Ng Kong Boon, Country Manager for Visa Malaysia, said: “We are proud to partner with PETRONAS to bring Malaysian consumers the speed and convenience of Visa payWave transactions at a petrol station for the first time. We continue to work closely with merchants to increase acceptance for Visa payWave enabled payment cards. Visa payWave contactless technology makes everyday transactions faster and easier for consumers, and is just as secure as any Visa chip card.”

“Visa is aligned with the Malaysian government’s goal to promote a cashless society and more banks will start to issue Visa payWave cards early next year. Visa payWave-enabled cards are now accepted at a number of merchants including: AEON Stores, AEON Big, KLIA Express, Sogo, TGV Cinemas, Borders, Krispy Kreme and Radio Shack, Jaya Grocer and Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf,” he added.

Visa is also working with PETRONAS on a Spend and Win contest. PETRONAS customers who spend RM500 accumulatively with any Visa credit, debit or pre-paid card from 5 December to 28 February will be eligible to enter the contest and stand a chance to win the new Mercedez-Benz C200. There will also be weekly prizes where consumers will win an iPad Air 2 if they spend RM50 and above in a single receipt with any Visa payment card.
