Visa Collaborates with Pintar Foundation to Provide Financial Empowerment Programme for Three Primary Schools

10/09/2019

In relation to Malaysia's National Strategy for Financial Literacy – a holistic five-year roadmap aimed at raising financial literacy levels and the overall financial well-being of Malaysians, Visa and PINTAR Foundation have collaborated to promote financial literacy among primary school students. A total of 120 Year 5 and 6 students in three primary schools located in the central region learnt how to manage their finances smartly in a fun and interesting way through the PINTAR Financial Empowerment Programme.

Workshops were held for 50 students at SK Kem Gerakhas in Melaka on 25 September; 70 students at SK Dusun Nanding in Selangor on 30 September to 1 October, and 50 students at SK Changkat Jong in Perak on 8 October. The students learned how to identify and differentiate between needs and wants, and prioritised them accordingly. They also learnt money management concepts such as how to save and spend wisely, in addition to developing entrepreneurial skills.

"Promoting financial literacy in Malaysia is a key focus area in our corporate social responsibility efforts. Visa is pleased to partner with PINTAR Foundation to promote financial education in the country as this is aligned with the nation's objectives. We believe that financial literacy starts from young. By educating primary school students through the PINTAR Financial Empowerment programme, we hope that more youths in Malaysia will instill responsibility when it comes to money management. At Visa, we have been working with various partners to create different financial literacy programmes. Through these programmes, we have reached out to more than tens of thousands Malaysians in the past few years. We believe it is important for us to continue our efforts in creating awareness and sharing knowledge about money management with fellow Malaysians," said Visa Country Manager of Malaysia, Mr Ng Kong Boon.

“With a vision to inspire young people to become responsible citizens through the PINTAR concept, PINTAR Foundation strives to continue building partnerships with corporations, partner NGOs and the Government to enhance the motivation and success of underperforming students through education. We are delighted to have Visa as our partner to promote financial literacy to PINTAR students – who are mostly from low-income families living in underserved communities throughout the country – with the necessary knowledge, skills and confidence to make sound financial choices,” said PINTAR Foundation Chief Executive Officer, Puan Karimah Tan Abdullah.

PINTAR Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation, with a vision to inspire the young generation to become responsible citizens through the three key tenets of Promoting Intelligence, Nurturing Talent and Advocating Responsibility (acronym of PINTAR). PINTAR Foundation was formed in 2008 to spearhead the implementation of the PINTAR Programme, which is a social responsibility initiative mooted by Khazanah Nasional Berhad.

Working in partnership with GLCs, private corporations, partner NGOs and the Government, PINTAR Foundation strives to build human capital by reaching out to Malaysian children in underprivileged communities through its PINTAR Programme, a school adoption programme, which seeks to improve the educational outcomes of students from underperforming schools throughout the country.

Since the PINTAR pilot project in late 2006, PINTAR members and partners have implemented no less than 300 PINTAR activities per year at their respective adopted schools with the involvement of students, teachers, parents and the community. To date, there are 566 PINTAR schools nationwide which have been adopted by 53 PINTAR members and partners; and more than 892,000 students and teachers have benefited from the many programmes and activities organised by PINTAR members and partners, as well as from the Foundation’s very own PINTAR National Programme.
